More and more new smartphones are equipped with an induction charging option. What is the wireless charging and whether it is better than the standard "on the cable"?

Inductive charging - what it is about?

Inductive charging means charging without a cable. This type of charging is possible due to the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction. In this way, we can transfer energy from the charger to the camera without the need to connect the cable. The charger uses an induction coil to create a variable electromagnetic field that the receiver coil in the phone turns back into electricity. This energy is then supplied to the battery.

What is wireless charging "Qi"?

QI is the most popular wireless charging standard. In the wireless charging industry, there are several competing standards for mobile devices such as smartphones. Most smartphones support both Qi Wireless Power Consortium and PMA or Air Fuel Alliance standards, which means that they will work on most available chargers.

How to charge the phone wirelessly?

To charge the phone wirelessly, you must first have a phone with the function of inductive charging. If your phone has no built-in option, nothing is lost. Special adapters that can be put on the phone are already available. They enable wireless charging via an induction charger operating in the Qi standard.

The second element is a wireless charger. Induction chargers are manufactured in various shapes and sizes, from larger ones resembling a mat to small disks embedded in furniture.

Wireless charging itself is a simple process. You do not need to connect your phone to the cable to charge it. Just put it with the display up on a special mat or countertop to start charging the smartphone battery.

Is induction charging faster?

No. Induction charging technology is developing rapidly, but still in the vast majority of cases, inductive charging is slower than charging with a cable, especially with fast charging technology.

Some wireless chargers are able to charge the phone with the battery in about two hours, but it is still much slower than what traditional chargers offer. When charging the phone wirelessly, we have to reckon with the fact that we will have to wait a long time to fully charge the battery. Nevertheless, this type of charging is definitely more convenient - we do not have to fight with a cable.

Is induction charging safe?

Yes. Wireless charging is very safe. And in some ways it is even safer than traditional cable charging. In this type of charging you are not exposed to an accidental electric shock. The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has found no evidence of the dangerous effects of induction charging on human health.

In addition, the magnetic field that is generated during inductive charging is small, limited in space. In the transmitting and receiving coils there are additionally ferrite filters that limit the release of electromagnetic radiation.

What phones have built-in induction charging?

In 2015, Samsung announced "the beginning of a new wireless charging era". The first phones that were equipped with wireless charging were Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
