How to use your Android phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot

You can use the SIM card on your Android phone to create a hotspot and have internet access on your laptop or tablet wherever you are. See how easy it is.

Currently, public Wi-Fi hotspots are becoming more and more popular, but from time to time you need to connect to the Internet in a place where there is no such point. Fortunately, using mobile data on your Android smartphone is very easy due to sharing your internet connection with other devices.

This is a good alternative to using a mobile Wi-Fi router, which can be expensive. You can share the transfer from your phone with other people. It is also worth using it when traveling abroad, because then only one person from the whole group will have to pay roaming charges.

Data usage.

When sharing your phone's internet connection (also known as internet tethering), pay close attention to the amount of data you use. Thanks to the numerous devices connected to one SIM card you will use your limit much faster. You can check this in the Phone settings menu. Go to Network and Internet and Data Usage to see how much you have consumed in a given period. You can also set a monthly data transfer limit.

Hotspot creation.

Share your Android internet connection as a Wi-Fi hotspot:

Open the Settings menu and enter Network and Internet;

Choose Hotspot and tethering;

You must configure a Wi-Fi hotspot before using it for the first time, so select this option;

By default, the phone will have the name of a Wi-Fi hotspot, with security enabled and the default password. You can save or change it for something that will be easier to remember by simply entering a new name or password and then clicking Ok;

Move the slider at the top of the page to enable the Wi-Fi hotspot, and give your password to anyone you want to allow access to. Then other people can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot just like any other wireless network;

Using your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot not only increases data usage, but also charges the battery. To improve the energy efficiency of your device, you can set it to turn off the Wi-Fi hotspot automatically when nobody is using it - just go to Advanced and then turn on the Turn off hotspot automatically option.

Internet sharing is possible on all phones. If you're using an iPhone, see the separate guide on this topic.
